Melaku – Open Road
With his latest single, “Open Road,” Santa Cruz-based artist Melaku continues to refine the spiritually-attuned pop sound that first defined his Golden Age era. Released under Angellion Records, this track is a masterclass in patient songwriting, beginning with an intimate piano arrangement that slowly expands into a rich, mid-tempo rock anthem. Melaku’s vocal delivery is grounded and sincere, perfectly capturing the restless energy of someone searching for a “sign from the sky.”
The song explores the intersection of mental clarity and physical movement, using the metaphor of a long drive to process internal “wildfire” thoughts. The production, which Melaku handled himself alongside co-writers Rachael Williams and Harry Egan, feels both nostalgic and modern, leaning into 70s-inspired textures without feeling dated. Personally, I find that the way the instrumentation swells as he sings about finding his inner “warrior” provides a genuine emotional payoff that most contemporary pop lacks. It’s a refreshing, soul-stirring journey for any listener.
