Prince Brendan – Here Lies Kathy
Prince Brendan has a talent for turning a creaky house in Lawrence, Kansas, into a space for expansive folk-rock. His latest single, “Here Lies Kathy,” is the third preview of his debut album, Love Songs for Sickly Girls, and it hits with immediate weight. The track explores the reality of loss, yet the production stays afloat with warm organ layers and twangy guitar work that recalls the melodic flair of bands like Geese or Foxygen. Brendan’s lyrics are sharp and observational, particularly when he contrasts Kathy’s decline with the longevity of “evil old men” who seem to live forever.
As I’m typing these words and listening back, I find myself nodding along to the bridge, genuinely impressed by how he balances such a grim hook with a melody that feels this inviting. It’s a rare skill to write about grief without being purely morose, but he manages it through total sincerity. This is a grounded, beautifully performed single.
