The Whiles – Petty on the Radio

Some songs have a way of bringing back memories without trying too hard, and “Petty on the Radio” by The Whiles carries that kind of charm. Taken from their 2026 album Hummingbird, the track reflects the Columbus, Ohio band’s longstanding affection for thoughtful songwriting and classic American rock.

The Whiles have spent years developing their own voice, drawing from indie rock, folk, and the melodic traditions of earlier generations. Here, the reference to Tom Petty feels fitting for a group that understands the lasting appeal of songs built around honesty and human connection.

What I appreciate most about “Petty on the Radio” is the idea behind it: music can become part of our personal history, reminding us of people, places, and moments that stay with us. It’s a theme that feels familiar without losing its meaning.

For a band with such a long history, The Whiles still have plenty to offer. “Petty on the Radio” is a welcome addition to Hummingbird and another reason to explore their music. It’s the kind of songwriting tradition I hope never disappears from independent rock.
