Polar Institute – Songs from Skriðuklaustur

Polar Institute’s latest EP, Songs from Skriðuklaustur, offers a mesmerizing blend of contemporary classical, post-rock, and jazz elements, crafted with an experimental touch. The quartet, led by British guitarist and composer Rob Thorpe, alongside Icelandic pianist Sævar Jóhannsson, cellist Sigurður Halldorsson, and clarinetist Símon Karl Sigurðarson, has created a hauntingly beautiful collection inspired by their time at the Gunnar Gunnarsson Institute in Eastern Iceland.

The EP was recorded at the iconic Sundlaugin Studios in Iceland, adding to its atmospheric depth. The opening track, “Perfectly Balanced in an Unbalanced Place,” sets the stage with its soothing, ethereal tones, seamlessly transitioning into the intriguing and evolving “Semi-Precious in the Sunlight.” The ensemble’s synergy is palpable, with each instrument contributing to a rich tapestry of sound that captures the listener’s imagination.

Thorpe’s ability to weave delicate melodies with introspective depth is nothing short of remarkable. The EP’s immersive nature invites listeners to engage in introspection and exploration, showcasing the ensemble’s mastery of creating a soundscape that is both meditative and invigorating. This EP is a must-listen for those seeking a musical experience that transcends the ordinary. I wholeheartedly recommend diving into this EP and letting it take you on a beautifully serene journey. This release is a testament to Polar Institute’s ability to evoke emotion through a meticulously crafted soundscape, ensuring that Songs from Skriðuklaustur is a captivating listening experience.
