Scott Fisher – Try so Hard

Scott Fisher has a good joke at the heart of “Try So Hard”: the harder someone works to look cool, the less convincing they become. Rather than hammering the point home, the Los Angeles musician lets the song stroll along with an easy confidence that makes its message even funnier.

Taken from his 2026 album A Billion Suns, the track brings together Fisher’s warm Wurlitzer, relaxed guitar playing and conversational vocals. Tim Lefebvre’s bass gives the music its loose, rolling feel, while Joey Waronker’s drumming keeps everything moving without crowding the song. There is a touch of soul in the rhythm and a little jazz in the way the instruments leave room for one another.

What I like most is Fisher’s restraint. He has plenty of musical ideas, but he never turns the track into a showcase for his own cleverness. The lyrics take aim at bragging and the pressure to impress, yet the mood stays playful rather than bitter. “Try So Hard” is sharp, catchy and genuinely enjoyable, proving that a song can make a point without making a fuss.
