Holding Poison – Knew I Couldn’t Have You
London’s Holding Poison have a knack for making personal stories sound enormous, and their new single, “Knew I Couldn’t Have You,” proves it. Rooted in the alternative rock sounds of the ’90s and early 2000s, the track pairs gritty guitars and punchy drums with melodies that stick around long after the music stops.
Frontman Mathew Blackwell explores a familiar situation: meeting someone who matters, only to realise the timing isn’t right. There’s sadness in that idea, but the band refuses to let it weigh the song down. Instead, the contrast between reflective verses and a soaring chorus gives the music a welcome sense of release.
The interplay between male and female vocals adds warmth, while Chris Sheldon’s polished production allows every instrument to make its mark without losing the band’s edge.
What I particularly like about this single is how naturally it balances nostalgia with excitement. Holding Poison understand that a song about looking back doesn’t have to sound defeated. “Knew I Couldn’t Have You” is confident, heartfelt rock songwriting with a chorus worth returning to.
